1 clear-eyed assessment
financial, commercial, operational and strategic health
The starting point for any business transformation process is a frank assessment of the current business’s status and outlook. This is frequently best conducted by an outsider working with Owners and Managers to provide fresh thinking. And fresh thinking is often the necessary catalyst for growth, change and improvement.
The questions to be addressed are:
- What is our status?
an assessment of the firm’s current business condition in terms of its financial , commercial, operational and strategic performance
- What are the desired outcomes?
the objectives and goals of the business
- What resources do we have?
a review of the human and tangible assets deployed in the business
- What resources do we need?
the gaps in skills, capabilities and funding that need addressing to enable the business to achieve its desired outcome
- What are the options available?
the strategy choices that enable the business to achieve its objectives
This is an open review and has at its core a determination to get all the good and bad news on the table.
The objective is to get a rapid understanding of all the issues, gaps, opportunities and challenges the business and its owners may be facing. More importantly, to identify the potential for growth, change and improvement.
In the first three weeks I met with all the head of function reports, their reporting managers and their team members. Each discussion helped me learn more about the business, individul perceptions of the challenges it faced and, more importantly what they thought the business should do to grow, change and improve. I soon had my "top issues" list and quickly indentified those willing to lead and "up for" change.
